General

Bulgaria is a modern country with beautiful 5 star hotels, restaurants, and coffee shops.  Even though the internet may be fast, the pace of life is noticeably slower, especially in the rural villages.  Many of these villages are remote, and undeveloped, giving them a quiet charm.  As such there are many unpaved roads, and cobble stone sidewalks.  It is important to bring comfortable, yet sturdy walking shoes.  There are not many elevators in the family hotels, and you will need to be able to carry your bags to your room, possibly up several flights of narrow stairs.  Be sure to pack light and portable.

What to Expect

Be prepared for walking tours of archaeological ruins, and centuries old monasteries.  We will be on our feet a good deal during the day, then relaxing in the evenings at a nice meal.  Bulgaria has 4 distinct seasons, and depending on the timing of your trip, you could experience a range of weather conditions.  Winters are cold with frequent snow, and abundant winter sports.  Summers are hot, and relatively dry, perfect for visits to the Seaside, or whitewater rafting.  The best times to visit the historical sites and monasteries are Spring and Fall.  During these months the weather is generally beautiful, yet rain is always possible.  Bring a rain coat or poncho.
